Reader’s Choice #1: Best Tom Hanks Film (Results)
After taking an entertaining trip back to the 1980s with a rundown of Tom Hanks’ best work during the decade, it was time to open out the choices to his full body of films. I asked you to vote and vote you did. If you build it, they will come – did I just say that? No, surely not. Digression isn’t a problem I have – honest.
…So, where was I? Oh yes, Mr Thomas Jeffrey Hanks – distant relation of Abraham Lincoln and American Sweetheart. I’d point you in the direction of my brief biography for more on how Hanks went from being a self-confessed geek in school to the biggest movie star on the planet. But, anyway, you’re itching to know what his best film is according to Top10Films readers (or maybe not but I know you want me to shut up and reveal the winner!)
Okay, okay, okay…!

This is a great series, Dan! So, none of his rom-coms made it except Splash, eh? Oh well, I think he’s great in them. But yay for Green Mile, I like that movie, though Cast Away is definitely the quintessential Tom Hanks flick, not many actors can play opposite a volleyball for the entire movie and makes it work!
I’m surprised The Green Mile won. Really? Of all Hanks films?
I’d go back to fun and young Hanks myself……..
Big, The Money Pit, The Burbs,A League Of Their Own, possibly the dramatic Philadelphia, or even go animated with Toy Story.
I’d put Saving Private Ryan up there, but am definitely surprised to see the other choices.
Pretty surprised, but an awesome movie all the same. Guess people really connected with Tom Hanks and his infected bladder.
Shocked at the lack of love for Big.
Shocked that Saving Private Ryan didn’t win. All good performances though.
No appearance by Forrest Gump? Boo.
No Money Pit? Boo.
I’d have put Private Ryan before Green Mile but only just, and Cast Away third. Three utterly brilliant films in their own right.
Any chance of more “reader’s choices” coming along soon?
Hopefully I’ll be doing more Reader’s Choice soon, Rodney.
Cast Away? jesus, who voted for that? with Heather and her choices.
loving the new layout by the way, Dan, i am Green Mile with envy
Loved the Green Mile but it doesn’t hold a candle to Saving Private Ryan! Never understood the fascination for Cast Away though
I think Saving Private Ryan is a piece of drivel – two gory battle scenes separated by 90 minutes of phony sentiment – and I’m not looking forward to the Top War films list- I’m sure Spielberg’s war opus mucus will make the cut.
I’m definitely surprised, and happy, that people chose Green Mile because it was also my personal choice – it’s the best film in Hanks’s resume.
The Green Mile is good, but over-long. The one film that cements him as a star is definitely Forrest Gump, and probably one of my favorites from him, and his most overrated being Philadelphia.
Wow, I’m surprised at these results. I can’t believe Splash is that popular.
