Martin deserved an Oscar nod just for the bar scene in Roxanne, where he actually does twenty eight “something betters.” The voice, the pacing, the movements. Effortless. Not many comedians then or now could have carried that scene off.

I’d agree with those that prefer early quirky Steve, with the odd exception (Parenthood, I’ve watched again and again…)

I’m a Steve Martin die hard fan. I’ve seen most of his works and I even like his take on The Pink Panther movies, although I equally love the originals. I’ve had the book Born Standing Up in my bedside drawer for a while now, just have to start reading it now someday soon. Great Top 10. Amazing actor/writer. His book Cruel Shoes still remains my go-to-book for when I’m down ’cause it’s a laugh riot.

Another wonderful piece. Steve Martin has always been a guilty pleasure of mine – especially his earlier work such as The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains. I would place his more outlandish stuff ahead of his more sentimental such as Planes, Trains, but this is an exhaustive, comprehensive and well-written post on one of Hollywood’s best modern day comedians.
