Dredd, the new film of the eponymous character, has gone straight in at number 1 at the UK box office. It took over £1 million on its opening weekend, becoming the first 18 certificate film to rank at number one since 2010. The film topped Anna Karenina, Lawless and Total Recall.

Shot with 3D cameras, Dredd has been adapted by 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Never Let Me Go scribe Alex Garland, with Pete Travis on directing duties. Created from the iconic British comic strip, the films stars Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings) as the legendary Judge Dredd, Olivia Thirlby (Juno), Lena Headey (300, Game of Thrones), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and Wood Harris (The Wire).

Plot Outline: “In Dredd, the future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighbourhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.”

Am I looking forward to seeing Dredd? Yes. Yes I am. I’m pretty amazed at the positive response this thing is getting. Not what I expected at all, but it’s a pleasant surprise.

I am looking forward to it. I’m not “jumping up and down, screaming like a schoolgirl” excited, but I am interested in checking it out. I’m not too sold on the threat in the film just yet, but all I’ve seen so far are trailers. I hope it brings a good sense of nostalgia with a newfound sense of reality/action to it.

It’s out in the UK already? I was just telling you on my post that I might not have the stomach for the violence, though I LOVE Karl Urban. I’ll wait and see but for sure I’ll rent it.

I can’t believe how much positive press is coming out for this! Compared to Stallone’s effort, this is positively Oscar-worthy! I’m excited to see how it goes…..

Seen it twice this week already.

Loved it.. Yes it was similar to the raid, but that doesn’t matter… pretty close to the comics!!

I probably won’t like it if it’s overly dark but everybody knows I’m Karl Urban’s biggest fan in the world :)
