Top 10 Super Girls for Supergirl Reboot
Keep the Kryptonite at bay and she’s ready to play. When Supergirl makes a return to the big screen, Top 10 Films has some suggestions of who could play the comic book hero.
As Hollywood panders to the youthful exuberance of that teenage crowd who love the back row in theatres, their gaze drifting away from the screen and towards second base, it can only be a matter of time before comic book superhero Supergirl returns to the big screen. Imagine the marketing possibilities as testosterone-fuelled boys are presented with the most powerful girl on earth – blonde, beautiful and armed with breasts that could deflect a bullet. Keep the Kryptonite at bay and she’s ready to play.
Although Supergirl has been portrayed in different ways and as different personas throughout her depiction in several comic books series published by DC Comics, the familiar incarnation is Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El. In the comic books she first appears in 1972, with further original stories appearing in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s before she was given a new lease of life during DC Comics 2011 reboot. In film, she was played by Helen Slater in Jeannot Szwarc’s 1984 film, while, more recently, Laura Vanderoot played her in television series Smallville.
As Christopher Nolan’s dazzling Batman trilogy reaches its curtain-closing finale, reboots of old favourites as well as new characters from both the DC and Marvel worlds will have to fill the void left by Bruce Wayne. But who should play Supergirl?
Of all the superhero superpowers – which ones would you most like to possess?
10. Laura Vandervoort

Laura Vandervoort is familiar to the Smallville audience so it would be an easy transition for her to take the role to the silver screen.
9. Gina Carano

The professional martial artist displayed a knack for kicking butt in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire. As long as the action outweighed the talking, she’d be a feisty Supergirl.
8. Helen Slator

How about Helen Slator reprising the role as an older Supergirl? She’d be a S-I-L-F. While we’re on the subject of this 1980s “classics” – how about some eighties films that need a sequel?
7. Ellen Page

She’d be a tough Supergirl with a quick retort if Lex Luthor wanted to play mind games. Not one to mess with but she might have a problem with the dress code though. She’s excellent in Hard Candy and Juno.
6. Sarah Michelle Gellar

Gellar needs a career reboot. The ex-vampire slayer has shown she has the presence to battle all types of foe. Plus, she’d look great in that cape.
5. Anne Hathaway

Showed she could make a superhero far more interesting than it was written in The Dark Knight Rises, Hathaway would be a long shot for the role but could potentially pull it off.
4. Emma Stone

Slight in stature but plenty of power under that cape…who wouldn’t like to see Emma Stone play Supergirl?
3. Chloë Grace Moretz

Been there, done that, got the Kick-Ass t-shirt. Maybe not the best career move to get typecast as a superhero but it isn’t the worst typecast to have. If the producers want a younger Supergirl surely Moretz is the perfect choice.
2. Saoirse Ronan

Terrific acting skills to go with her ass-kicking potential as seen in Hanna.
1. Jennifer Lawrence

Huge star power. Might be a bit busy with Hunger Games sequels but would be a perfect Supergirl.

I’d agree only on Lawrence, Danzel, some of the others would make a hilarious choice (Paige for example
But. I’d rather see her as Wonder Woman!
I’d love to see Tabbreth Betthel in the role, she was born for wearing a tight suit and is also an amazing actress and the prettiest lady in the world
Glad to see Sarah Michelle Gellar on this list. She’d definitely be on mine for this topic. Along with Anne Hathaway.
I’d like to add Melissa George to the list. She’s got the looks and acting chops.
@Dezzy: …Wonder Woman…? I see my next list…
@Jaina: Melissa George – good one!
Hi, Daniel and company:
Excellent choices!
I’d pay good money to see Ellen Page in her ‘Hard Candy’ Red Riding Hood kick Lex Luthor in the Gazzottz!
Also think Emma Stone would make a fantastic ‘Huntress’ from DC comics.
Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Serenity, Homeland’) would make a great Wonder Woman.
Great list! Not sure about Helen coming back. I’d vote for Ellen or Gina! Think they might both look a bit crap as blondes though maybe.
Gina Carano would make a killer female superhero, she’s already done that with Haywire. But I don’t see her as Supergirl. She and Lawrence might make a good Wonder Woman though, they both have voluptuous figures.
LINDSAY LOHAN FOR SUPERGIRL!!!
Okay, I’m kidding. To be honest, I dont see any of the above being suitable for the role. As a fan of Supergirl since the early 90′s, I’m inclined to lead with a mid-20′s actress who is both tall and strikingly beautiful – Helen Slater was perfectly cast but was hindered by woeful scripting and truly horrid direction from Szwarc. Slater is more classically beautful than any of the others, the majority of whom feel more “homely” than the Greek Godess-esque Kryptonian I imagine her to be.
That being said, I’m struggling to find a current contemporary actress who can portray her persona while carrying the physique – Ellen Page? Man, that’s a left-field choice if ever I saw one! And I must be the only one who finds Jennifer Lawrence a tad “squinty” to look at – she reminds me of a younger Rene Zellweger, and actress I jovially label “chipmunk cheeks”, and I’d think she’s completely unsuitable in the role. Of those you have included, I’d probably lean towards Laura Vandervoot, although it must be said she’d make an excellent Power Girl over Supergirl….
And I’d go see a new Supergirl movie in a heartbeat. Can’t believe it’s not on the cards already!
My vote out of these would be share-she… but also Gina Carano would be an interesting pick
I don’t anticipate a Supergirl taking flight on the silverscreen anytime soon, but Ronan would be a great choice.
@Jack Deth: I think that’s why I picked Page. Totally not what you think when you imagine SuperGirl but there’s always room to go a different route and she’s an excellent actress.
Supergirl? Well i suggest laura from smallville enough said but i think the chick from bodyrock.tv the blonde chick ? Susana spears?
Tara Conner. She’s got the Super body. Jennifer Lawrence no way. She sounds like Lindsay Lohan too many cigarettes and booze.
How about Yvonne Strahowski from Chuck TV Series?
